Pocket Survival Kit

Anytime you are going into the wilderness, whether for a hike or to hunt or to float a river, a survival kit is a good idea. The problem, though, is that backpacks and other equipment can be lost - along with your kit. In fact, losing these things is sometimes what causes a wilderness survival emergency.

That is why having some survival supplies in your pockets is such a good idea. Call it your “pocket survival kit.” At a minimum have some way to start a fire (matches or lighter) and a small knife. Aspirin, bandages and other small but very useful items can be spread among the various pockets of your shirt and pants. Avoid using you jacket pockets for this, because jackets get lost or left behind more easily.
